so today i was walking home from the university housing office and noticed something about the hedge around one of the parking lots.

this hedge has two kinds of plants, planted in an alternating pattern -- on a broadleaf and the other an evergreen. juniper i think. i knew that. fall quarter i walked by this hedge everyday to and from one of my classes. thing is -- through the fall and the winter too both plants were just green. the were even very similar shades of green. so despite having two kinds of plants, it was just a green hedge. it did its job of blocking the view of the ugly parking lot and not much else.

turns out the broadleaf plant is one of those where the new leaves in the spring grow red then turn green later in the season. so walking by it today, it was alternating bands of green (from the evergreen) and red.

it was pretty cool looking.
